Outside Air

Outside air is introduced into HVAC systems as make-up for air exhausted, pressurization requirements or ventilation purposes for the occupants. Amounts of outside air can be range from 5 to 10% of the total required system airflow to 100% outside air for areas requiring a single pass that has to be exhausted from the building. Humidifiers are added to the HVAC systems to provide the necessary humidification for this outside make-up air. In Southern California humidification is required for the dry Santa Ana winds while other parts of the country must consider their own winter conditions. Weather data has been developed by ASHRAE and other organizations to account for the humidity ratios at these extreme design conditions. “Air changes per hour” is a term used to define how many times per hour the air in a controlled space will turn over. When considering humidification the designer should consider the “air changes per hour of outside air”. To highlight this, consider a temperature and humidity controlled space with 20 air changes per hour. This means the air will turn over in space once every three minutes. With only 10% outside air, the air change rate of the outside air will turn over once every 30 minutes while a system with 100% outside air will have an air change rate of once every 3 minutes. Selecting the proper humidifier and control to meet the response rate will allow the space to remain in control.
