Q Applied Systems is a manufacturer’s representative for Climate by Design, International, a manufacturer of desiccant dehumidification and air handling equipment for the commercial and industrial markets and applications requiring dry air climates like food processing, ice arenas, waste water treatment plants, pharmaceutical, automotive, rental, healthcare, aviation, etc... Desiccant dehumidification is employed in applications where vapor compression technologies alone cannot meet the low dew point requirements.
Pharma and Nutraceutical Applications
Formulating and packaging of powder based and gel cap products require low humidity tolerances. Powders must flow freely and be uniform in weight when mixing and packing. Often in applications manufacturing spaces are controlled to the 20%RH range requiring desiccant dehumidification.
Probiotics
Often called the “good bacteria” probiotics have exploded in recent years in the healthy living market for people and pets. These living bacteria and yeasts are found in many products including yogurts, cheese and a variety of health supplements. Probiotics, as a manufacturing ingredient, are normally stored in low humidity refrigerated rooms to keep them from activating (similar to long term storage of seeds to prevent germination ). Walk-in style rooms with refrigerated unit coolers maintain temperature while a desiccant dehumidifier is used to reject the necessary moisture from the space.
Lab and Manufacturing Applications
Some general laboratory and manufacturing applications have requirements to maintain controlled spaces in the 40%RH range. This is usually too low a condition to be maintained reliably with a DX refrigerant or chilled water system alone. Often a powerful, desiccant based dehumidifier can be integrated into a small slipstream of the return air system to provide the necessary deep drying to maintain the space conditions. Onboard PLC controls optimize the reactivation energy required for the necessary moisture rejection and space control.
Silos and Conveying
Products stored in silos are sometimes hydroscopic in nature. A small amount of desiccant dried air is commonly pumped in to blanket the free area inside the silo. This dry air eliminates condensation inside the silo that can prevent spoilage of food products and agglomerating of materials that lead to ratholing and other distribution blockages. Pneumatic conveying companies will use this same dry air when transporting materials from the silos to manufacturing.
